{"id":3750,"date":"2026-05-19T03:46:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T03:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/?p=3750"},"modified":"2026-06-14T03:52:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T03:52:19","slug":"strategizing-indonesias-foreign-policy-in-the-era-of-competing-great-powers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/?p=3750&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Strategizing Indonesia\u2019s Foreign Policy in the Era of Competing Great Powers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), convened a Public Seminar and Guest Lecture in collaboration with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) at the LPPM Hall, Makassar, on Tuesday, 19 May 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This academic forum brought together prominent scholars and practitioners, including Rizal Sukma, Senior Fellow at CSIS and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as well as Lina Alexandra, Head of the International Relations Department at CSIS Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guest lecture, titled \u201cASEAN, U.S.\u2013China Rivalry, and the Regional Order in East Asia,\u201d was delivered by Rizal Sukma and moderated by Isdah Idris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"379\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-5.jpeg 379w, https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-5-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Guest lecture by Dr. Rizal Sukma<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his presentation, Sukma highlighted several critical dynamics shaping the region, including the evolving realities within ASEAN, the intensifying strategic rivalry between the United States and China, and the trajectory of Indonesia\u2019s long-standing free and active foreign policy doctrine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasized that Indonesia must exercise prudence in calibrating its strategic posture and partnerships to effectively safeguard and advance its national interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session was followed by a public seminar under the main theme \u201cRecalibrating Indonesia\u2019s Foreign Policy in the Era of Great Power Rivalry,\u201d featuring presentations by senior researchers Andrew Mantong and Pieter Pandie. The discussion was moderated by Abdul Razaq Cangara, with Agussalim Burhanuddin and Pusparida Syahdan serving as discussants. This session critically examined the growing challenges to ASEAN centrality, particularly its diminishing cohesion amid mounting external pressures from major powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"393\" height=\"262\" src=\"https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-4.jpeg 393w, https:\/\/hi.fisip.unhas.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-4-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Public seminar session<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the discussion underscored Indonesia\u2019s geopolitical significance, especially in relation to the strategic role of the Makassar Strait as a vital maritime corridor. The Strait\u2019s position within global shipping routes and its relevance to regional security dynamics were highlighted as key considerations in Indonesia\u2019s foreign policy and maritime strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond intellectual exchange, the event also marked an institutional milestone, serving as a platform to strengthen collaboration between CSIS and the Department of International Relations at Unhas.
