Makassar, November 21, 2024 \u2013 The Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) held a joint lecture with Universiti Malaya entitled \u201cPrecarious Journeys: Understanding Refugee Transit and Protocols in Malaysia and Indonesia\u201d. This event was held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 09.45\u201312.00 WITA in the Prof. Syukur Abdullah Hall, FISIP UNHAS, and can be followed online via Zoom Meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This public lecture is the result of a strategic collaboration between the Department of International Relations, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) and the Department of International and Strategic Studies, Universiti Malaya. This initiative aims to explore issues of refugee movements in the Southeast Asian region, with a special focus on transit and protocols in Indonesia and Malaysia as part of regional dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its implementation, this joint lecture examines the critical dimensions of refugee movements in Southeast Asia, with a main focus on three important aspects. First, Regional Migration Dynamics, which explores the complex migration patterns in Indonesia and Malaysia as transit points and primary destinations for refugees from conflict zones such as Myanmar, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. Second, Policy and Humanitarian Challenges, which examines the legal framework, international obligations, and practical challenges in protecting refugees. Third, Non-Traditional Security Implications, which covers the impact of migration flows on regional stability, human rights, and transnational governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    After the presentation of the material, it was continued with a discussion session involving students from the Department of International Relations, UNHAS and the Department of International and Strategic Studies, Universiti Malaya. This session was designed to provide a space for cross-country academic dialogue, allowing students from both institutions to share perspectives, experiences, and critical analysis related to refugee issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This collaborative initiative represents an important academic intervention in understanding one of the most complex humanitarian challenges in Southeast Asia. The event was designed to provide in-depth insights to academics, practitioners, and students on the increasingly complex refugee issues, with a dialogic and participatory approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
