On January 14, 2026, the Department of International Relations (IR) at Hasanuddin University once again held the 2026 Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (PPTM) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, held at the LPPM Hall of Hasanuddin University, Makassar. The event was attended by the Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Hasanuddin University, representing the Rector; the Head of the IR Department; UNHAS IR lecturers; and approximately 184 participants representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and educational institutions in Makassar, such as UNIBOS, UNIFA, UNSULBAR, SMAN 17, and SMAN 21 Makassar.
The event began with a joint viewing of the press statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, who outlined the direction of Indonesia’s future foreign policy. The event was then officially opened with the Adam Malik Awards, a token of appreciation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to local media outlets for their contributions to supporting Indonesian diplomacy. In his statement, Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized the concept of “Diplomacy Begins at Home,” namely diplomacy rooted in efforts to protect the people and strengthen national resilience amidst increasingly fragile and unpredictable global conditions. The current world is characterized by economic interdependence, the blurring of the lines between peace and conflict, and the strengthening of global multipolarity. Indonesia, he stated, remains committed to the principles of an independent and active foreign policy, emphasizing dynamic resilience, regional cooperation, economic diplomacy, and strengthening multilateralism.

The Foreign Minister also highlighted economic diplomacy as a core aspect of foreign policy, including cooperation on investment, food and energy security, contributions to the SDGs, and the protection of Indonesian citizens abroad. Indonesia also continues to promote the role of ASEAN, Indo-Pacific cooperation, peace dialogue in conflict areas, and the strengthening of multilateral diplomacy. The event continued with a talk show session featuring Muhammad Takdir, Head of the Foreign Policy Strategy Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Prof. H. Darwis, MA, Ph.D.; and Atika Puspita Marzaman, S.IP., MA, as moderators. The talk show focused on discussions of the dynamics of Indonesian foreign policy, global challenges, and the role of academics in strengthening the future direction of national diplomacy.
The series of activities for the 2026 Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at HI UNHAS emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to pursuing an independent and active foreign policy that is adaptive and oriented towards the interests of the people amidst uncertain global dynamics. Through the concepts of “Diplomacy Begins at Home” and “Dynamic Resilience,” Indonesian diplomacy is directed not only at security but also at economic, food, and energy security, as well as strengthening regional and multilateral cooperation. This activity provided a consolidation space, particularly between the government and academics, to understand and critique the future direction of Indonesian foreign policy. The event concluded with an interactive quiz session, the awarding of merchandise to the winners, and a group photo session to conclude the entire series of activities.
