Lecturer of International Relations of Unhas Explores ATLAS.ti with Dr. G.A. (Gerben) Moerman

Makassar, September 10, 2024 – Lecturers of International Relations of Hasanuddin University (Unhas) attended the International Relations Workshop on ATLAS.ti at Arya Duta Makassar, organized by the Department of International Relations of Unhas. This workshop presented Dr. G. A (Gerben) Moerman from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, an expert in qualitative research methods. Dr. Moerman guided the International Relations Lecturers in understanding and practicing the use of ATLAS.ti software, which is designed to assist in qualitative data analysis more efficiently and comprehensively.

The workshop started at 13.00 WITA, and the lecturers were introduced to the various advanced features of ATLAS.ti. One of the main focuses was how this software allows users to systematically categorize data. The lecturers practiced this technique by identifying the types of data they have, whether in the form of text, images, or sound, and determining where the data comes from. ATLAS.ti facilitates data grouping based on predetermined categories, which can then be used to support various research variables.

The hands-on practice session provided an opportunity for lecturers to group and connect their data. They learned to identify data that supports certain research variables, as well as understand how relationships between variables can be visualized effectively. With ATLAS.ti’s ability to accommodate hundreds of data, lecturers can more easily manage and process large amounts of data to produce in-depth and accurate analysis. Dr. Moerman also explained how ATLAS.ti allows users to build networks between data and variables, so that researchers can see patterns or relationships hidden behind the data. Through this practice, lecturers not only developed a theoretical understanding of ATLAS.ti, but also technical skills in utilizing the software’s features for more structured research.

The event ended at 18:00 WITA with an interactive question and answer session. The lecturers expressed their appreciation for Dr. Moerman’s in-depth explanation of the practical application of ATLAS.ti. This workshop is expected to improve the quality of research analysis in the Unhas academic environment, especially in processing more complex qualitative data.
