Snowball Sampling and Methodological Accuracy in HI Research
On September 17, 2024, an additional class in Methodology lecture by Mr. Dr. G.A. (Gerben) Moerman was held by continuing the discussion on research methodology with a focus on specific challenges in international relations (IR) research. Where research in the field of IR often faces difficulties because the research subjects are not always easy to reach or access directly. Therefore, choosing the right methodology is very important. In this session, Moerman discussed various methods that can be used to overcome this problem, including how to organize research data systematically.
One topic that received special attention was snowball sampling, which is often used in social research where this method, although effective, is at risk of bias. To reduce this bias, researchers are advised to ensure variation in the sample by talking to people from various backgrounds at random, in order to gain a broader and deeper perspective. The aim of this approach is to achieve variation logic, where variation in the sample can provide more representative data.
Furthermore, the discussion also discussed the importance of scientific literature in research. Literature review, which includes scientific literature, theories, methods, or previous research results, is an important foundation for researchers to understand the context and achieve research objectives. Mr. Moerman also touched on the importance of accuracy and precision in quantitative research, while highlighting the role of AI technology, such as Chat GPT, in assisting researchers. However, he warned that although AI can provide quite good explanations, this technology still has limitations, especially in providing in-depth analysis that requires critical thinking and human interpretation.
The explanation then became the end of the Methodology Course series which was carried out offline in the Adjunct Professor program. The Methodology class will then be continued online which can be attended by all students majoring in International Relations. These classes are expected to be valuable provisions that are not only useful during lectures, especially in the research process for all students in general and International Relations students in particular. Let’s wait together for the opportunity to learn more from him at the next meeting.
